This week, 30 eager children have enrolled in the Youth Pickleball Camp at Hucklebery Park, marking the maximum capacity allowed due to instructor availability. The camp, organized by Hannibal Park and Recreation in collaboration with the Hannibal Pickleball Club, focuses on teaching young participants pickleball techniques, strategies, and game rules.
The surge in popularity led Hannibal Parks and Recreation to convert the tennis courts at Huckleberry Park into pickleball courts last year, reflecting the community’s growing enthusiasm for the sport. Anticipating future growth, instructors at the camp foresee the establishment of competitive pickleball teams in local high schools.
Bill Baker of the Hannibal Pickleball Club shared his optimism: “They’re starting college teams now, and a lot of high school kids play it in PE. I believe that middle school students also participate in pickleball, and I believe it will continue to grow, eventually resembling a school-sponsored tennis team. I think you’ll see pickleball teams, too.”
Looking ahead, Hannibal Parks and Recreation, along with the Hannibal Pickleball Club, are gearing up to host Pickleball 101 in September. This initiative aims to introduce adults to the fundamentals of pickleball, further cementing the sport’s place within the community.
As pickleball gains traction in Hannibal, its inclusive appeal and accessible nature are poised to foster continued interest and participation among residents of all ages.
