Toledo Pickleball Club: A Hub for Enthusiasts & Rapid Growth

Toledo Pickleball Club: Pickleball has surged in popularity, rapidly becoming one of the fastest-growing sports in the world. It blends elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis, played on a court smaller than a tennis court—roughly the size of a badminton court. Connie Mierzejewski, president of the Toledo Pickleball Club, is a key figure in promoting this sport.

A Passion for Pickleball

Mierzejewski’s personal journey with pickleball began after a friend’s persistent urging. “I finally took her up on it and I’ve been hooked for the last 14 years.” Her dedication is reflected in her active participation and the growing community she fosters.

“It’s the fastest-growing game in the world,” said Mierzejewski. “It’s a combination of tennis, badminton and ping pong, or table tennis. The court is smaller than a tennis court and the game is played with a paddle and a ball. Our goal is to expand the number of players. We want to grow pickleball every day.”

Holistic Benefits of the Game

Connie plays in Rossford and appreciates the holistic benefits of the game. “It’s great exercise. It’s also good for your hand-eye coordination and it helps mentally, too. It’s one of those sports that can be competitive on the court, but everyone appreciates good play so if someone gets a shot past me, I just say nice shot.”

Pickleball is accessible to players of all ages, and many continue playing well into their later years. “We have many people who pick it up after the age of 70. We even have one dear member who is in her 80s and travels to tournaments. We have many people who play, including me, who have had knee replacements, hip replacements, heart conditions, shoulder injuries.”

Social and Community Aspects

The social aspect of pickleball is also a significant draw. “I have enlarged my circle of friends. We go out to eat after we play and we have an adult beverage here and there.” The Toledo Pickleball Club provides opportunities for players at all levels, from beginners to advanced.

“There are players of all levels so you can be a beginner or a novice and you can advance. You can get as good as you want to. There are players here who will take you under their wing and help you advance if you want. You do have to be a member, but it easy to do. You just go to our website to sign up. It’s very inexpensive.”

Mierzejewski showcased her skills and enthusiasm. “Kevin and I decided to give it a whirl. I’ve got a wicked serve with your name all over it,” she said. Despite the challenging heatwave, Mierzejewski made the experience enjoyable. “Yeah, Connie gave me all the pointers. I mean, I gave her a few bucks, but she told me all the secrets. Except for that one,” she laughed.

For those interested in joining the Toledo Pickleball Club, the process is straightforward. “Very easy to do, just go on our ToledoPickball.com website,” Mierzejewski advised. With pickleball’s rapid growth and its welcoming community, it’s clear that this sport is more than just a passing trend.
