Weyburn Opens New Pickleball Courts with Community Event

Weyburn Opens New Pickleball Courts: Weyburn’s latest sports addition—the new pickleball courts—celebrated its grand opening with an exciting ceremony at Jubilee Park, behind the Credit Union Spark Centre, on Wednesday evening. The event featured a lively barbecue and an opportunity for the public to experience the sport firsthand.

Court Expansion and Vision

“We got four courts, and we do have room for two more for the future if we decide to go ahead and come up with an agreement with the city,” said Bob Maurer, president of the newly formed Pickleball Weyburn. Although pickleball had been a part of the city for years, the formation of Pickleball Weyburn, affiliated with Pickleball Saskatchewan and Pickleball Canada, marks a new chapter.

Maurer’s inspiration stemmed from his time in Arizona, where pickleball courts are a significant fixture. “Pickleball is so huge in Arizona, and big, beautiful courts there,” he explained. Upon returning home, he felt the need for better facilities and initiated a conversation with the city’s officials.

“We come home in April, and we were playing on the tennis courts in the summer and thought, you know what, we can do better. So, we got together, and I had a meeting with our mayor, and he passed me on to Andrew Crowe (Director of Leisure Services with the City of Weyburn). We made a deal to build some pickleball courts on the outdoor rink.” – (Maurer)

Community and Usage

The city provided the venue at no cost, while Pickleball Weyburn organized the necessary materials through sponsorships. The newly constructed courts are expected to be popular, with the sport’s rapid growth likely bringing tournaments to Weyburn. The courts are available daily from 8 to 11 a.m., with additional evening hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Outside these hours, they are open to the public.

“Just come play, use the courts, enjoy it. If you really fall in love with it, you become a member of Pickleball Weyburn, and come play with the group.” – (Maurer)

The opening festivities, starting at 6 p.m., included a barbecue and a chance to try out pickleball. Weyburn Pickleball provided the paddles and balls, while participants were encouraged to bring only their running shoes.
