Western Regional Pickleball Event Winners: In a stellar display of talent, Greater Trail pickleball players dominated the podium at the 2024 Pickleball Canada Western Regional Championships, which took place in Vernon from July 25-28. A strong contingent of 13 athletes from the Kootenays competed against 626 players from across British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Yukon. The event utilized 24 indoor and outdoor pickleball courts, with matches running from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, showing the dedication and skill of participants.

Medal Count and Achievements

The Kootenay team’s efforts were rewarded with an impressive haul of 12 medals, including three gold, six silver, and three bronze. Their achievements underscored their competitive edge and commitment to the sport. Brenda Nedelc from Greater Trail captured gold in Women’s Singles pickleball, further solidifying her status as a top player. Christine Wayling also performed admirably, securing bronze in WoMen’s Doubles pickleball.

Doubles Success

In Men’s Doubles pickleball, Steve Johnson and Kevin Thomas showed their synergy and skill, earning gold in a fiercely contested field. Darrell St. Denis and Pat Vlanich contributed to the team’s success by clinching silver in the same category. The Mixed Doubles events saw further Kootenay success, with Kevin Thomas and Frances Lloyd achieving silver, and Steve Johnson and Wanda Flack also taking silver in their respective category.

Final Highlights

The Women’s Doubles saw Christine Wayling and Tanis Bouchier securing bronze, rounding out the Kootenay team’s impressive performance at the championships. Their collective achievements reflect not only individual prowess but also the strength of Greater Trail’s pickleball community.
