This surge in interest can be traced back to its origins in 1965, when Jon Pritchard first introduced the game in his backyard. Local Enthusiasts Lead the Charge
The sport’s local adoption began in earnest in 2011 when Findlay residents Dick and Greta Schrock took lessons from Nancy and Dick Heebsh. Their immediate passion for the game led them to become mentors, offering lessons to the community. The Flag City Pickleball Club, which started in 2009, now boasts over 200 members.
“As unofficial ambassadors of pickleball in Findlay, we love to teach others how to play the sport,” Dick Schrock said. Since June, Dick and Greta have introduced over 60 new players, ranging from 10 to 80 years old, to pickleball. They have six more Tuesday Training sessions scheduled for those interested in learning the game.
Game Mechanics and Appeal
Pickleball, a blend of ping pong and tennis, is played with one or two players per team. Unlike tennis, points can only be scored by the serving team if they win the rally. Games are typically played to 11 points, with a requirement to win by at least two points. Tournament games can extend to 15 or 21 points.
“Pickleball is a very social sport and is played by people of all ages,” Dick explained. “If you show up at a pickleball court, people will ask you to play and someone will give you a paddle if you don’t have one. There is fun and laughter, and everyone can play.”

Dick and Greta encourage everyone to experience pickleball for themselves. “Do you want to have some exercise, make lots of new friends, and have a blast doing it? Then come out and try pickleball,” Dick urged. “You’ll be glad you did, just like the millions of other new players who have tried it.”
