Pickleball Hours Reduced At Sonnenberg Park Following Complaint

Pickleball Hours Reduced At Sonnenberg Park: In a decisive move to address pickleball noise complaints, the Canandaigua City Council has voted to cut the operating hours for pickleball at Sonnenberg Park. Effective immediately, the eight pickleball courts at the park will now be available for play from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., a reduction of two hours from previous times. The unanimous vote, passed 9-0 on Thursday, aims to mitigate disturbances reported by local residents.

Background and Concerns

Residents living on Howell Street had raised issues about late-night noise caused by pickleball games. The clamor from plastic balls striking wooden paddles and the use of vehicle headlights to extend play after dark had become increasingly disruptive.

In response, the city had previously converted tennis courts at Sonnenberg Park to pickleball courts in 2023 to accommodate the sport’s growing popularity.

Resident Involvement

Concerns were initially voiced in June when some nearby residents met with Ward 1 City Councilor Michael Mills. Mills took these concerns to the Council’s Environmental Committee, which recommended the new hours. The Council finalized the decision on July 31, emphasizing the need to balance the sport’s popularity with community comfort.

The Canandaigua City Council has reduced pickleball playing hours at Sonnenberg Park from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., effective immediately. The decision, approved unanimously on July 31, responds to pickleball noise complaints from Howell Street residents.

Issues included late-night disturbances from pickleball games and the use of vehicle headlights to extend play after dark. The park’s eight courts, converted from tennis courts in 2023 to meet growing pickleball demand, will now close two hours earlier. The change follows a June meeting between residents and Ward 1 City Councilor Michael Mills, who brought the concerns to the Council’s Environmental Committee before the final vote.
