Pickleball in Massena Central Capital Project Plans

Pickleball in Massena Central Capital Project: As the Massena Central School District plans its next capital project, pickleball courts are emerging as a key consideration. Recent discussions have highlighted the growing popularity of pickleball and its potential impact on student engagement and community connection.

Pickleball’s Rising Popularity

Facilities Committee Chair Robert LeBlanc recently visited Madrid-Waddington Central School and was impressed by their updated sports facilities, including pickleball courts. “I think we could do something and offer more as exterior sports for kids,” LeBlanc said. He noted that pickleball and tennis courts were well-used by students, and expanding these options could enhance recreational opportunities.

Vision for Expansion

LeBlanc and the Facilities Committee are advocating for the inclusion of pickleball courts in the district’s next capital project. They envision a facility that integrates basketball, tennis, and pickleball courts, aiming to offer a diverse range of activities for students. “Kids like to play basketball. Pickleball is very popular to connect the two generations. It’s not a sport that’s too demanding. You don’t have to be trained,” LeBlanc said. He believes that such facilities would foster community connections and support student involvement.

Project Planning with King + King Architects

The district has engaged King + King Architects for the project, selecting them from a competitive group of firms. This decision follows a comprehensive proposal process and marks a new phase in planning. King + King will help design a project that meets the district’s goals, including the integration of pickleball courts.

Next Steps

The project will include detailed planning for the proposed pickleball facilities alongside other upgrades. LeBlanc is focused on ensuring that the final plan meets the needs of students and the community, making pickleball a central feature of the district’s future sports offerings.
