Pickleball Courts Near Heskett Center Face Relocation Proposal For Trees

Pickleball Courts Near Heskett Center: After concerns emerged from students about the planned removal of trees on campus, Student Senator Andrew Bobbitt took action. On Wednesday night, Bobbitt introduced a resolution to reconsider the proposed location for the new pickleball courts. The existing courts, situated near the Heskett Center and Wilkins softball complex, are slated for demolition to make way for a new indoor softball practice facility. Groundbreaking for this facility, alongside the courts’ demolition, is set for September 14.

Alternative Location Suggested

The proposed new site for the pickleball courts is the space between the Heskett Center, Lindquist Hall, and Hubbard Hall. Bobbitt’s resolution aims to address student concerns over the potential loss of trees. “I was made aware of a student petition asking that the university choose an alternative location,” he said. Students have expressed displeasure over the planned removal of trees, which Bobbitt argues will take years to replace fully.

History of Tree Removal

Bobbitt noted that the university has a history of removing trees for development projects, citing the conversion of the former golf course into the innovation campus. “The argument that the university will often offer as an alternative is, ‘Yes, we’ll lose this tree but don’t worry, we’ll plant a whole bunch more,’” he explained. “As stated in the bill, it will take a very long time for these trees to reach maturity.

Proposal Details and Next Steps

Bobbitt proposed a minor shift in the courts’ planned location to avoid impacting the trees. “My proposal would just be shifting the location of the courts over on that same plot,” he said, adding that this move would help preserve the current trees if the university doesn’t have a more viable alternative. The resolution will be reviewed by committee next week, and if approved, will go to a Student Government Association (SGA) vote on September 11.
