Upon looking out his window, he was met with a scene that was anything but his usual pristine backyard. “They had backhoes and chainsaws,” Stull said, bewildered by the heavy machinery uprooting his yard. “I had a lot of native plants that were all pulled up along with much of the grass. The kids’ swing set and sandbox were thrown up against the house along with a pile of lumber that used to be their treehouse.”
Pickleball Court Initiative
The shocking alteration to Stull’s property is part of Governor Ron DeSantis’s Great Outdoors Initiative, which aims to create public recreational spaces on private lands. The centerpiece of this initiative in Stull’s case is a new pickleball court. This relatively new sport, combining elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis, has been designated as a key feature in DeSantis’s push for enhanced outdoor activities across Florida.
“I had no idea what pickleball was,” Stull admitted, highlighting his confusion over the sport. “What the hell even is a pickleball!?”
State’s Explanation
We reached out to the governor’s office for details on the pickleball initiative. Spokesperson Elisha Tomilson elaborated, “The pickleball court in Mr. Stull’s yard is just one of many such projects in this exciting, new initiative.” The program is also introducing similar recreational facilities, including a disc golf course and an 18-hole golf course in different locations across the state.
Tomilson assured Stull that he would benefit from the new pickleball court, despite the disruption to his property. “He’s going to love it! We hope he takes full advantage of the new facility. He is paying for it after all!” However, Stull remains skeptical and frustrated by the forced transformation.

Stull’s discontent with the initiative is palpable. “I still don’t know what the crap pickleball is or why I have to sacrifice my backyard for it,” he said.
