Now, he’s channeling his passion into organizing a National Veterans Pickleball League (NVPL) tournament this fall.
The Power of Pickleball
Wilson, 44, started playing pickleball in Washington, his home state, and fell in love with the game. “After transitioning from the military, I found transitioning into civilian life difficult,” he shared. “I sought out different activities to help alleviate these difficulties and that is when I came across the game of pickleball.” For Wilson, pickleball isn’t just a sport—it’s a lifeline. “Pickleball is a way to get out,” he said. “It helps me feel good about life.”
Aiming to Give Back
With a goal to support other veterans, Wilson launched a GoFundMe page to fund the NVPL tournament. His nonprofit, established last year, aims to cover court fees and provide necessary equipment like paddle balls, portable nets, and safety glasses. His fundraising goal is $5,000, and he’s currently raised around $500. “My hope for the NVPL is that no veteran, including their family, would be discouraged from participating because they do not have the required equipment,” Wilson explained.
Community Support and Future Plans
Wilson is actively searching for a local venue in Temecula for the event and envisions a permanent facility for veterans. His long-term plans also include expanding support for veterans with disabilities. “Who’s willing to help?” he asked. “I’m thinking huge.” The community has already shown its support, evidenced by local events like the PickleFlix Film Festival, organized by Jordan Bryant. Held in August, the festival celebrated pickleball with comedy films and attracted a sold-out crowd of 351 people.
Personal Connections and Future Goals
Wilson, who moved to Temecula in 2021 with his wife Windelyn and their two children, has found a supportive community through pickleball. “I have met some of the kindest, most encouraging people through pickleball,” he said. His tournament is set to take place in November, close to Veterans Day, aiming to provide a joyful and supportive experience for fellow veterans.
