MTSU’s Pickleball Extravaganza: The Unexpected Winner That Took Everyone by Surprise!

MTSU’s Pickleball Extravaganza: This past weekend, the MTSU Tennis Complex transformed into a hub of activity and excitement as over 50 student-athletes, teachers, and community members gathered for the inaugural MTSU Pickleball Extravaganza. The event, celebrated for its vibrant atmosphere, featured not only competitive pickleball but also a live DJ, delicious food, and refreshing brews from Cedar Clade Brewery. With pickleball taking center stage, the day was a perfect blend of sport and socializing.

A Warm Welcome from MTSU’s Own

Jimmy Borendame, head coach of the MTSU men’s tennis team, set the tone for the event, expressing his enthusiasm for the diverse mix of activities.

“I just want people to come and say they had a great time this weekend: pickleball, football and a little tennis. It’s all fun.” – (Borendame)

Football’s Star Appearance: Coach Derek Mason Makes Waves

Adding to the excitement, Blue Raider football head coach Derek Mason made a special guest appearance. Mason praised the strong community support for the football program and expressed his eagerness to build on that momentum. He also highlighted the intensity of the “100 Miles of Hate” rivalry with Western Kentucky University, with the Blue Raiders striving for their first series win since 2018. Mason’s presence showed the event’s role in strengthening community ties and boosting local sports enthusiasm.

Pickleball Action: A Competitive and Fun-Filled Tournament

The heart of the event was the pickleball tournament, where competitors ranged from local community members to MTSU men’s tennis athletes. Each participant enjoyed four random doubles matches, with the chance to win various prizes based on their performance.

After a thrilling 128 matches, resident Nate Brown emerged as the pickleball champion. Brown, who was joined by his daughter who finished in second place, attributed his success to luck and great partnerships during the games.

“If you’re not first, you’re last; it was a luck of the draw type of thing. I got great partners and enjoyed smiling and laughing the entire time.” – (Brown)
