Grand Forks’ PlayIT! Complex Takes Pickleball to the Next Level with Major Expansion—Here’s What’s Coming!

Grand Forks’ PlayIT! Complex Takes Pickleball to the Next Level: PlayIT! Multi-Sport Complex in Grand Forks is capitalizing on the surge in pickleball’s popularity with significant upgrades to its facilities. The complex is in the final stages of completing four new pickleball courts, designed specifically for the sport.

This expansion allows PlayIT! to offer up to eight courts for pickleball play simultaneously, enhancing accessibility for local enthusiasts.

Facility Upgrades and Versatility

“We took six of the batting cages and turned them into four additional pickleball courts that will be used solely for pickleball.” stated Bill Spatz, the facility owner. This adjustment reflects the growing demand for dedicated pickleball spaces, although other courts at PlayIT! will remain versatile, accommodating various sports like basketball, volleyball, futsal, and stick hockey.

Seasonal Play and Community Engagement

The new courts are scheduled to be ready in time for the peak season.

“During the summer, obviously, people want to play outside. We do get a surprising number of people who still play inside if they don’t like it windy or they don’t like playing outside. But winter is our season.” – (Spatz)

This flexibility ensures that pickleball enthusiasts have options year-round, regardless of weather conditions.

Collaboration with Local Pickleball Club

In addition to the facility upgrades, PlayIT! is partnering with the Grand Cities Pickleball Club to offer organized programs and leagues.

“We’ll have courts for different levels of players. So, if you’re a beginner, you will play on one court. If you’re an intermediate, you’re in another court, etc.” – (Spatz)

This arrangement aims to cater to all skill levels, promoting inclusivity and growth within the sport.

Non-profit Transition for Future Growth

Recently, PlayIT! transitioned from a for-profit to a non-profit organization. This change positions the facility to apply for grants and receive donations, supporting its mission to expand and enhance its offerings.
