Black Hills Pickleball Classic Tournament Draws Big Crowd: Pickleball Surges in Rapid City

The annual Black Hills Pickleball Classic Tournament took center stage at the Canyon Lake Activity Center on Sunday, September 15. The event attracted 160 participants from three states, competing in over 300 games. The pickleball tournament highlighted the competitive spirit of the players and the growing community around pickleball.

Community Building Through Pickleball

“It’s always a lot of fun. You know, pickleball is more about just the socializing. And we have a great group here. It is fun when you bring people that we don’t know to come in and get know and laugh, and they have, different challenges, different games, and let’s see as much as the competition is, there and, we look forward to socializing and the laughter.” – (Steve Dick)

Growing Popularity of Pickleball

Pickleball, recognized as America’s fastest-growing sport, has seen significant growth in recent years. In response to the increasing demand, Rapid City converted the old tennis courts at Wilson Park into pickleball courts last May. This adaptation shows the sport’s expanding appeal and the community’s enthusiasm for more pickleball facilities.

Ongoing Opportunities at Canyon Lake

Although the Black Hills Pickleball Classic has concluded, the Canyon Lake Activity Center remains a hub for pickleball enthusiasts. The center offers weekly pickleball lessons and drills every Monday at 5:30 p.m., focusing on proper form, serving techniques, and more. As a non-profit membership organization, it continues to support the pickleball community year-round.
