Kettle Falls’ New Pickleball Courts: The journey to bring pickleball to Kettle Falls began approximately five years ago, ignited by a pickleball clinic led by Joni Holliday. This event inspired Evelyn Florio to explore the possibility of transforming the local tennis courts into dual-purpose facilities that would also accommodate pickleball. On Saturday, the dream came to fruition with the official reopening of the Kettle Falls tennis and pickleball courts at Happy Dell Park.
Acknowledging the Key Contributors
In her opening remarks, Florio expressed deep gratitude towards Holliday, stating, “What you see here is the result of Joni’s encouragement. Without her, this would not have happened.” Holliday’s legacy includes a generous donation of $1,400 to the project before she passes from cancer in 2023.
The refurbishment of the tennis courts was made possible through contributions from several local entities. The Kettle Falls Rotary played a significant role, alongside support from Crandall’s Coffee, Ralph’s Tavern, Northern Ales, and TJ’s Hometown Bar and Grill.
The October event, which coincided with Pickle Month, also saw local eateries participate by offering pickle-themed dishes. Additional thanks were extended to Joe Petrucelli, Linda Moe, and Roads Scholar Driving School for their substantial donations.
Overcoming Obstacles
Despite facing numerous challenges throughout the project, Florio remained resolute in her commitment. Reflecting on the struggles, she shared,
“No, we’re not going to give up, and we didn’t, we just kept plugging away. Even though we had many obstacles placed in our path, we kept going and we did it!” – (florio)

Following the speeches and the ceremonial ribbon cutting, attendees enjoyed a demonstration pickleball game, a skills clinic, and various refreshments, marking the successful culmination of the long-awaited project.
