Calgary’s Largest Indoor Pickleball Facility: Pickleball enthusiasts in Calgary, Alberta, will soon have a state-of-the-art indoor facility to call home as Mega Courts Pickleball and Tennis Court facility prepares for its grand opening on March 18, 2025. With 13 oversized pickleball courts and four tennis courts, the 60,000-square-foot complex will be one of the largest indoor pickleball venues in the city, providing a much-needed hub for recreational and tournament-level play.
Meeting the Demand for Pickleball Courts in Calgary
The demand for dedicated pickleball spaces has surged in Calgary as the sport’s popularity grows. According to open data from the City of Calgary, the city operates only 101 shared public pickleball and tennis courts, not including those run by community groups or private facilities.
Mega Courts fills a significant gap by offering high-quality indoor courts that can be used year-round, regardless of weather conditions. “This is kind of a project from the heart… we’re doing this because we’re players,” said Mega Courts founder Vlad Voskoboinikov.
“We want to have a place that we could be proud of and our kids and grandchildren can be proud of, and a place where people could come together and just have fun.” – (Voskoboinikov)
A Vision Turned Reality
Voskoboinikov’s journey to opening Mega Courts began three years ago when he first discovered pickleball but struggled to find a place to play in Calgary.
“I discovered pickleball three years ago, and I wanted to play, and there was no place to play. So naively said, Well, why don’t I just open a place up?” – (Voskoboinikov)
What started as a simple idea quickly became one of Calgary’s most ambitious indoor sports projects, with a multimillion-dollar investment in top-tier facilities, professional-grade courts, and player-focused amenities.
World-Class Facilities Designed for Pickleball Players
Mega Courts is located near other major sports venues, including the Calgary Soccer Centre, Flying Squirrel, and Junior Varsity Volleyball Training Centre, creating a hub for indoor recreation in southeast Calgary.
The facility includes:
- 13 oversized pickleball courts designed for recreational and tournament play
- Four tennis courts
- Professional competition-grade flooring from Tomko
- High-end soundproofing to reduce noise impact
- Lounge and social areas for players to relax and connect
The name “Mega Courts” was inspired by the grand scale of the facility.
“People you know initially said, ‘why don’t you get like, a cute name like pickle your nickel,’ or something like that? When you come in, you’ll understand the name. It’ll make sense to you.” – (Voskoboinikov)
Huge Interest from Calgary’s Pickleball Community
Even before officially opening, Mega Courts has already generated massive interest.
- Over 100 groups toured the facility in one weekend alone.
- Voskoboinikov receives between 250 and 350 emails daily from players eager to book courts.
- Social media feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with many players excited to have a dedicated pickleball space.
Some basketball players have also welcomed the new facility, as it will help free up outdoor courts previously used for pickleball.
A Major Investment in Pickleball
Building a facility of this scale has not come without challenges. Voskoboinikov has made a substantial personal investment, pouring hundreds of thousands of dollars into creating the best possible playing experience.
Key investments include:
- Custom-built, competition-grade flooring for optimal performance.
- Advanced soundproofing, requiring miles of special fabric.
- High-end amenities and social spaces for an enhanced player experience.
“The amount of money you spend on this thing, and this is basically what people want, this is your business right here. So, you want to make sure it’s as perfect as you can get, and that’s what we did.” – (Voskoboinikov)
Even contractors working on the project have expressed interest in joining Mega Courts.
“I play pickleball, and I want to come and stop by. I can see myself after work, coming here with friends, or even playing at lunch,” said Andy Strasser, President of Merlin Integrated Solutions, who worked on the facility’s soundproofing.
Membership Limits to Ensure Court Availability
Due to overwhelming demand, Mega Courts will limit the number of memberships to ensure everyone has a fair chance to book courts.
“We don’t want to oversell the memberships. I want people to be able to book a court. I don’t want people to be mad at us because of ‘I paid, I got a membership, and I never get a court.’ It would be easy to sell the same court 20 times, but we don’t want to do that.” – (Voskoboinikov)
To maintain fair access, members will only be able to book courts up to seven days in advance, preventing long-term monopolization of court time.
“We think the community will reward us by loyalty. Sooner or later, there will be another club and another club, but if we build an experience for them, there’s no reason to go anywhere else. Even if you look at our memberships, everybody’s on the same playing level. Everybody can only book seven days in advance.” – (Voskoboinikov)
Final Steps Before Opening
Mega Courts is set to officially open to the public on March 18, but the final hurdle is securing approval from the City of Calgary, which must complete its fire and health inspections.
“The place will be clean and ready to go on Thursday, and literally, I’m guarding my phone and waiting for the city to give me a call. We just need the city to come here and do a final fire and health inspection.” – (Voskoboinikov)
Once inspections are complete, Calgary’s pickleball players will finally have access to one of the best indoor facilities in the region.
