Vancouver Island Pickleball Champs: Parksville is set to host the Vancouver Island Pickleball Championships, a premier event that will draw close to 250 players from across the Island and beyond. Scheduled for August 23 to August 25 at Parksville Community Park, the tournament promises to be a significant occasion for the pickleball community. The event is sanctioned by Pickleball BC and marks a substantial upgrade from previous Island tournaments organized by the Oceanside Pickleball Club (OPC).
Rebranding and Growth
The OPC, having organized smaller-scale Island tournaments over the past two years, has rebranded this year’s event to elevate its status.
“We are thrilled to bring this event to Parksville. Pickleball is a fast-growing sport that resonates not only with residents of Vancouver Island but also with visitors who love the area’s beauty and recreational opportunities.” – (John Philip)
Event Schedule and Format
Over three days, participants will engage in at least four games each. The schedule includes women’s competition on August 23, men’s on August 24, and mixed doubles on August 25. Players will compete in various brackets, with over 220 participants already registered across 14 categories, including 10 teams in the men’s over 70 age category.
Challenges and Excitement
Philip highlighted the logistical challenge of organizing such a large event. “For example, in mixed doubles there are 65 teams organized into four different events based on age and skill, all fitting on 16 courts.” Games will be played outdoors at multiple locations, including Parksville Community Park pickleball courts, tennis courts, Parksville lacrosse box, and Berwick Parksville. The finals are set to take place from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. each day, with spectators welcome to witness the action.
Community and Sponsorship
The event has garnered strong support from local sponsors, including Berwick Parksville Retirement Community, Qualicum Beach Cafe Group of Companies, and Selkirk Sport. “Pickleball games can be filled with lots of action… hard smashes, incredible rallies, long points and don’t forget the all important ‘dink’ shots.” Philip added. The Championships are expected to show some thrilling matches, enhancing Parksville’s reputation as a hub for pickleball enthusiasts.
