New Pickleball Courts in Casselman: A Community Win

New Pickleball Courts in Casselman: In Casselman, pickleball is more than just a game—it’s becoming a cornerstone of community life. The recent opening of new courts is a testament to the sport’s growing popularity, blending elements of tennis, table tennis, and badminton into a dynamic experience that has captivated North America in recent years.

New Facilities Unveiled

On July 31, the town of Casselman marked a significant milestone with the grand opening of two new public pickleball courts at École secondaire catholique de Casselman. The Casselman Pickleball Committee played a pivotal role in this development, having secured a $150,000 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation. This generous funding, complemented by the efforts of the Conseil scolaire de district catholique de l’Est ontarien (CSDCEO) and the Municipality of Casselman, fully covered the construction costs.

Community Support

During the opening ceremony, Casselman Mayor Geneviève Lajoie expressed her gratitude for the collaborative effort that made the project possible. “I don’t think we’d have this court if it wasn’t for you guys advocating,” Lajoie noted, reflecting on the successful partnership between local government, the school board, and the pickleball committee.

Local Engagement

Mark McKendrick, President of the Casselman Pickleball Committee, highlighted the sport’s growing local engagement, with 75 registered players already on board. In addition to the new courts, the community enjoys access to an indoor court, three other designated outdoor courts, and even the local rink, which serves as a pickleball venue when not occupied by ice sports. “It’s starting to gain traction,” McKendrick said, acknowledging the sport’s appeal across various age groups, although it remains particularly popular among retirees.

Supporting Community Growth

The Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF), a key player in supporting community initiatives, continues to champion local development. In the past year alone, OTF invested over $110 million into 1,044 projects aimed at fostering community well-being, promoting active lifestyles, and encouraging youth development throughout Ontario.
