Amherstburg Eyes New Pickleball Courts Amid Funding Shortfall

Amherstburg Eyes New Pickleball Courts: Amherstburg Town Councillors are ready to give the green light to a significant enhancement to the town’s recreational facilities: the construction of new pickleball courts at the Libro Centre. The project has been a long time in the making, with the Jones Group emerging as the lowest bidder among nine proposals.

The Jones Group has offered to build eight new pickleball courts for $468,568, a bid substantially lower than the highest offer, which stood at $801,692. Despite this favourable bid, the project is facing a budgetary shortfall. The approved budget for the courts is $450,000, meaning the town will need to cover the additional $18,568 through its Parkland Dedication Reserve Fund.

A Year of Preparation and Collaboration

The road to this point has been one of extensive planning and community involvement. Over a year ago, Amherstburg Town Councillors approved the project, setting the stage for detailed discussions and design consultations. Town administrators have worked closely with the Amherstburg Pickleball Association to ensure that the design of the new courts meets the needs of local players and aligns with the town’s vision for recreational facilities.

Regional Momentum for Pickleball Growth

Amherstburg’s move comes at a time of growing enthusiasm for pickleball across the region. Last week, the Town of LaSalle also broke ground on six new pickleball courts on Front Road, reflecting the sport’s increasing popularity and the demand for more dedicated playing spaces.

As Amherstburg Town Council meets on Monday night, the approval of the Jones Group’s bid is expected to mark the beginning of a new chapter for pickleball in the town. The project represents an investment in community recreation and shows the town’s commitment to supporting the sport’s rapid growth and providing high-quality facilities for its residents.
