NSCRD Hosted Pickleball Conference in La Ronge: Training the North

NSCRD Hosted Pickleball Conference in La Ronge: In a recent push to elevate the profile of pickleball across Northern Saskatchewan, the Northern Sport, Culture and Recreation District (NSCRD) hosted a crucial conference in La Ronge. The goal was clear: to ignite a passion for pickleball and broaden its appeal within the region. The event brought together recreation coordinators from various communities including Jan’s Bay, Buffalo Narrows, Creighton, La Ronge, Sucker River, Green Lake, Sandy Bay, Grandmothers Bay, and Timber Bay.

We get together periodically throughout the year and provide training for the Northern Saskatchewan school coordinators and every year we try to do something different, whether it is archery or canoeing or smashball,” said NSCRD Program Manager Ryan Karakochuk. This year, the focus shifted to pickleball—a sport that has evolved significantly since it was first introduced to La Ronge eight years ago.

The Rise of Pickleball

Pickleball, a dynamic sports has seen a surge in popularity. Played with short-handled paddles and a perforated plastic ball over a low net, the sport can be enjoyed both indoors and outdoors. Its fast-paced nature and accessibility make it an attractive option for players of all ages. However, its growth has been gradual, with initial enthusiasm failing to gain the traction seen today.

This past year, pickleball was brought up. We brought pickleball about eight years ago to the La Ronge area, but at that time, it wasn’t as big as it is now. It never really gained any traction because maybe it was just starting out or not everybody knew about the game,” Karakochuk reflected.

Training and Equipment Distribution

The La Ronge conference served as an educational platform where attendees delved into the rules and setup of pickleball. The NSCRD distributed 12 starter kits, each including a manual, a net, paddles, and balls—enough to initiate new players into the sport.

It’s just enough to get them started and going and each one of our coordinators have a budget during the year, so they can definitely purchase more stuff and some already have a little bit of equipment,” Karakochuk explained. “Now, they are able to use what they have knowing how to play the game.

Local Adaptations and Support

Pickleball’s versatility is evident in its adaptability to various settings. While commonly played on tennis and badminton courts, some communities, like Creighton, utilize indoor rinks during the summer months when the ice is removed. This flexibility underscores the sport’s potential to integrate into diverse community settings.

The NSCRD’s initiative was supported by Queen City Pickleball Hub and Pickleball Paddles Canada, which provided the essential equipment distributed at the conference. This collaborative effort marks a significant step in fostering the growth of pickleball in Northern Saskatchewan, offering new opportunities for engagement and enjoyment in the sport.
