Chilliwack Moves Forward with New Pickleball Facility, Design Awarded

Chilliwack Moves Forward with New Pickleball Facility: In a significant step forward for pickleball enthusiasts in the region, the City of Chilliwack has officially notified the public of its intent to award a design contract to Vernon-based MQN Architects. This decision comes as part of the city’s commitment to developing a new pickleball facility aimed at accommodating the growing demand for this rapidly popular sport.

Financial Details Behind the Award

The design award is valued at an estimated $226,485, a figure derived from comprehensive pre-design work already undertaken. The city’s public notice explained that it plans to directly award the design work to MQN Architects to avoid incurring additional costs that would arise from hiring a different firm. Chilliwack has already invested significant funds—$30,000 with MQN Architects and another $40,000 with various sub-consultant engineering firms—during the pre-design phase, which included cost estimations and preliminary approvals necessary for moving the project forward.

Strategic Location and Growing Demand

The new facility will be strategically situated between the Landing Sports Centre and Exhibition Field, a location chosen to serve the burgeoning interest in pickleball as well as the city’s expanding population. The City of Chilliwack has recognized the need for this facility for some time, particularly in light of the sport’s surging popularity. A staff report detailing the multi-use facility is expected to be presented at an upcoming council meeting in October.

A Community Impact

The Chilliwack Pickleball Club (CPC) stands poised to reap the benefits of this new development. Established in April 2017, the CPC has experienced impressive growth, boasting over 375 members who regularly utilize several courts throughout the week. As highlighted on their website, club members are “delighted to have the largest indoor pickleball facility in the Fraser Valley of BC,” currently housed at the Landing facility on Spadina Avenue. Other local venues include Portage Park, G.W. Graham, Rosedale Community School, and Promontory School, with the latter two offering evening play opportunities.
