Powell River Pickleball Association Seeks Approval for Game-Changing Pickleball Facility

Powell River Pickleball Association Seeks Approval: In Powell River, a local organization is pushing for a land lease to build a dedicated indoor pickleball facility, one that promises to serve current players and future generations of players. The qathet Pickleball Association (qPA) has formally requested a lease agreement from the city to secure 1.25 acres of land to construct an 8-court indoor venue aimed at elevating the sport in the region.

Meeting the Growing Demand for Pickleball

The surge in pickleball popularity in Powell River is undeniable. What started with just 10 players in 2013 has increased to a robust community of 150 this year. Association president Susan Young explained that the need for a dedicated facility has never been more urgent.

As the PR Racquet Centre prepares to close its doors, the community finds itself with limited options for playing. The proposed facility would provide much-needed space for players, especially juniors, fostering the development of lifelong athletes.

Strategic Location and Community Impact

Young emphasized the strategic location of the proposed facility. The qPA is seeking land adjacent to the upper parking lot of the PR Recreation Complex, a site that would allow the new facility to integrate seamlessly with the community’s existing fitness offerings.

The qPA envisions the facility as part of a broader fitness hub model, where pickleball could be a key part of the overall health and wellness ecosystem in Powell River.

A Step Toward Accessibility and Growth

The request will be formally presented at Tuesday’s Committee of the Whole meeting at 3:30 p.m. If the city council approves the land lease, the qPA will move forward with plans to build the new facility, offering a much-needed solution for pickleball players across Powell River.
