Brent Primus (born April 12, 1985) is an American mixed martial artist who competes in the lightweight division. He currently fights for the Professional Fighters League (PFL) and formerly competed for Bellator MMA, where he once held the Bellator Lightweight World Championship. Primus trains out of Sports Lab Team Oyama and Gracie Barra Portland, and he holds a 3rd-degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Fabiano Scherner.
Known for his grappling-heavy style and submission finishes, Primus has built much of his career around rear-naked chokes and other joint locks. His professional record reflects a fighter who has consistently finished opponents, with most of his victories coming by way of submission.
Early Life and Background
Brent Primus was born on April 12, 1985, in Eugene, Oregon, and was raised in the same city. He attended Sheldon High School, where he played soccer and helped his team tie South Eugene High School for the co-state title. After high school, he began training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and earned his black belt in only six years, an unusually fast rise that signaled his natural talent for grappling.
Primus had a difficult childhood and teenage years. He never met his biological father outside of a prison setting, once seeing him on an episode of the television show “Cops.” At the age of 13, he was kicked out of his home by his stepfather and became homeless. He moved between homes for a period and eventually began selling marijuana to support himself. By age 15, he had purchased his own house, and at 16 his home was raided by rival gang members who held him at gunpoint. When he turned 18, his home was raided by police and he was sent to jail.
During this turbulent period, Primus was involved in frequent fights. A friend eventually signed him up for an amateur fight, an event that redirected his life and introduced him to the world of mixed martial arts.
Path to MMA
Primus compiled an amateur record of 5-1 before turning professional in September 2010. He made his professional debut by defeating Chris Ensley via first-round submission. In his second professional bout on May 12, 2012, he defeated Roy Bradshaw by submission in the first round as well, establishing himself early as a finisher.
His growing reputation caught the attention of Bellator MMA, and he signed with the promotion in 2013. Primus made his Bellator debut on September 27, 2013, at Bellator 101, where he submitted Scott Thometz with a rear-naked choke at 3:48 of the first round, improving his record to 3-0. He followed this with a first-round rear-naked choke of Brett Glass at Bellator 109 in November 2013, and a first-round TKO of Chris Jones at Bellator 111 in March 2014, the first finish of his career that did not come by rear-naked choke.
