Growth of Pickleball in Mumbai: In India, where cricket reigns supreme and football is a close second, pickleball is steadily gaining traction. This sport is not just a recreational activity but also a growing community sport, particularly in cities like Mumbai and Bengaluru. Over the past two years, pickleball has attracted players of all ages, from children to seniors.
Sport That Welcomes All Ages and Skill Levels
Invented in 1965 in the United States, pickleball combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. Its simple rules and engaging gameplay make it accessible and enjoyable for many. Unlike tennis, pickleball offers a great workout without the same physical intensity, making it ideal for older adults or anyone seeking a low-impact exercise.
Parnika Waghmare, a 28-year-old architect from Thane, shared how pickleball has helped her reconnect with friends.

She had loved tennis but did not have the chance to play competitively. “Even though I am out of form, I can play easily,” she added after a two-hour session at an outdoor court in Sharadchandraji Pawar Mini Stadium TMC. Waghmare plans to play every weekend and hopes to compete in local tournaments.

Creating Lasting Friendships Through Gameplay
On a recent Sunday morning, about 15 people gathered at the stadium to play pickleball. The friendly atmosphere encourages social interaction, making it a community-focused sport. Sujay Kumar, a 53-year-old businessman and former badminton player, also discovered pickleball after a back injury sidelined him from his usual sport.
“I have been playing for a month, and it’s been great. There is a community for pickleball, which isn’t the case for badminton. I have met around 20 new people.” – (Sujay Kumar)
He has signed up for coaching lessons twice a week and has already met around 20 new people.

Kumar appreciates the community aspect of pickleball, which he found lacking in badminton. The sense of camaraderie among players is evident, as they encourage each other and celebrate successes together.
Bright Future of Pickleball in India
As pickleball continues to grow in India, its popularity reflects a broader trend toward accessible sports that promote social interaction.
The game not only provides physical benefits but also fosters connections among players. With increasing interest, more facilities and organized events may emerge, potentially leading to a more vibrant pickleball community in India.
