Pandemic Sparks Growth
During the pandemic, pickleball attracted attention as a low-impact, no-contact activity, drawing people towards an active lifestyle. Inspired by its rise in the U.S., the sport quickly gained traction in India. Natekar recalls,

The All India Pickleball Association (AIPA), established in 2008, ramped up efforts to promote the sport after 2015. Collaborating with AIPA, WPBL launched a league to increase exposure for Indian players and attract sponsors.
Building a Sporting Ecosystem
The WPBL’s goal extends beyond its league. It plans to host state and national tournaments, aiming to make pickleball commercially viable.
“From our end, the league is just the starting point,” (Gaurav Natekar),
emphasizing the need for consistent efforts to grow the sport.
Corporate sponsorships are boosting pickleball’s development.
“Companies are interested in sports other than cricket,” (Gaurav Natekar),
noting the appeal of pickleball as a cost-effective option for brands seeking high returns.
A Rural Talent Revolution
While urban kids face distractions, Natekar sees potential in rural India. He highlights, “All the biggest stars today come from tier 2 and tier 3 cities.” With corporate funds reaching smaller towns, rural youth have a chance to shine.
A Bright Future for Pickleball
As India embraces fitness, pickleball offers a unique blend of fun and competition. The WPBL’s initiatives aim to strengthen its position, paving the way for a healthier and more sports-focused nation.
