The city has seen a remarkable rise in dedicated courts, with nearly 120 new facilities established in just five months. The sport, which blends elements of tennis, table tennis, and badminton, has become a favorite among fitness enthusiasts due to its accessibility and low-impact nature.

A Sport for Everyone

Originating in the United States, pickleball has gained immense popularity in urban hubs across India, including Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Bangalore. The game has drawn large crowds, with daily footfalls exceeding 100 at some arenas. Court rental prices range from Rs 600 to Rs 1,500 per hour, depending on the amenities offered.

Surabhi, the owner of Smash Pro Arena on Sardar Patel Road in Secunderabad, highlighted the sport’s appeal to a diverse audience.

With increasing participation, pickleball arenas are witnessing a surge in demand. Amruth Kumar, owner of PicklePlex, described the trend as unprecedented. He emphasized the sport’s minimal physical strain, making it a popular choice, especially among middle-aged players.

“Our hourly rate of Rs 700 is quite reasonable, ensuring mutual benefits for all involved.” – (Kumar)

He also noted that weekend footfalls exceed 200, particularly on Sundays. PicklePlex is planning to host events and tournaments to further boost engagement.

Health Benefits and Social Appeal

Ajay, a sports manager at one of Hyderabad’s arenas, observed that many players return regularly due to the sport’s health benefits. He pointed out that pickleball promotes calorie loss and improves fitness levels.

Additionally, the social aspect of the game contributes to its rising popularity, as families and colleagues frequently participate in friendly matches.

Future of Pickleball in Hyderabad

With dedicated pickleball facilities like PicklePlex and Smash Pro Arena, the sport is expected to grow further in Hyderabad. Major tournaments and organized events will likely drive more participation. The All India Pickleball Association (AIPA) estimates that India has around one million players, while the sport is played by nearly five million people across 84 countries.
