Akhil Mathur Claims 2 Titles at PWR India Masters: Akhil Mathur, a seasoned software developer and programmer, has become a beacon of inspiration for pickleball enthusiasts everywhere. Competing in the PWR DUPR India Masters held at the DLTA Stadium in New Delhi, Mathur snagged the titles for both the 50+ Men’s Singles and the 50+ Men’s Doubles, where he teamed up with fellow competitor Bhushan Akut. His triumph at this prestigious event isn’t just about the accolades; it’s a testament to his belief that age really is just a number.
“Age is just a number,” Mathur insists, showcasing a wisdom that only comes with experience. He firmly believes that with passion and dedication, anyone, regardless of age, can excel in sports. “It is not about 50 or being younger; if you have the passion and hunger to play the sport, then it gives a lot of motivation and keeps you looking forward to the end of the day,” he told Pickleball Now in an exclusive interview.
The Power of Pickleball
For Mathur, pickleball transcends the realm of competition; it’s a social activity that fosters friendships and community. The court becomes a melting pot of stories and camaraderie, enriching the playing experience. “One more thing about pickleball is that you get to meet a lot of interesting people through the game. Everybody has a story to tell. It is as much about community as it is about sport,” he added, highlighting the personal connections that make the game so special.
Before diving into the world of pickleball, Mathur cut his teeth in ITF Seniors tournaments, providing him a solid foundation to transition smoothly into this new sport. “I have played in the ITF senior’s tournament, and I did reasonably well over there. After playing there, I did get a little bit of help while playing pickleball. The transition was certainly smooth,” he explained, revealing how past experiences shaped his current success.
Overcoming the Odds
Yet, despite his impressive wins, Mathur faced physical challenges during the tournament. Competing in both the 50+ and 35+ categories meant that he often had back-to-back matches, pushing his stamina to the limit. “Actually, I was also playing in the 35-plus category, and at times, matches were happening one after the other. So it was a bit tiring. At one point, I nearly gave up after playing 4-5 matches non-stop,” he admitted, capturing the intense grind of competitive sports.
But the allure of pickleball kept him coming back for more. “The addiction of the game is such that I never really did mind the challenge,” he confessed, embodying the spirit of a true competitor. Mathur’s journey is a compelling reminder that with passion, perseverance, and a little bit of love for the game, anything is possible.
