Christian Alshon’s Mental Strength Tips: Christian Alshon, a top pickleball player known for his bold personality, shared six tips for staying mentally strong during matches. Coached by Leigh Waters, Alshon emphasized that mental toughness is as important as physical skill in pickleball. He shared these strategies in a recent YouTube video to help players of all levels improve their mental game.

Preparation Is Key
Alshon stressed the importance of preparation, quoting Benjamin Franklin:
“Failing to prepare is preparing to fail.”
He explained that getting proper rest, staying hydrated, and studying opponents’ strategies before a match build confidence.
“When I step on a court and I know that I’m fully prepared and I know I’ve done everything that I can do to prepare me for that match, there’s very little pressure and questioning about my mental game because I know I’m ready,” (Christian Alshon).

Staying Neutral in Tough Moments
Managing emotions during a match is critical, Alshon said. Inspired by Trevor Moawad’s book It Takes What It Takes, he recommended staying neutral rather than getting upset.
“Negative internal emotions are going to have a negative external effect,”. Alshon suggested asking three questions to remain calm: “What happened? What is happening? What is going to happen?”(Christian Alshon)
Breathing and Taking Breaks
Breathing deeply is another simple but effective tool. Alshon demonstrated breathing in for four seconds, pausing for two seconds, and exhaling for four seconds to calm the body and mind.
He also encouraged players to take advantage of the time between points to reset.
“If you lost a point, you don’t want to start the next point super quickly. You’ll want to take a little bit of time before the next point to breathe, get neutral, and ask yourself the three questions,” (Christian Alshon).

Discipline and Smart Shot Selection
Discipline plays a major role in mental strength, particularly during high-pressure moments. Alshon shared how he used to struggle with risky shots late in matches but learned to stay disciplined.
“When it’s 9-9, instead of going for some crazy shots, simplify and maintain what is working,” (Christian Alshon).
Being selective with shots helps players stay focused and avoid unnecessary mistakes.
Building Mental Toughness
Through preparation, emotional control, and discipline, Alshon’s tips aim to help players develop the mental strength needed for long matches.
“Pickleball requires a lot of mental strength and stamina,”(Christian Alshon).
These pickleball strategies can help players stay calm under pressure and perform better on the court.

A Plan for Every Player
Alshon’s advice offers practical steps for players of all skill levels. From beginners to seasoned pros, his focus on preparation, discipline, and emotional balance shows how mental strength can influence performance. By applying these techniques, players can gain confidence and improve their game in any competitive setting.
