Key Biscayne Pickleball Group Seeks Dedicated Courts to Foster Community Connections

Key Biscayne Pickleball Group: A group of Key Biscayne residents has asked the Village Council to dedicate part of the Village Green for pickleball courts. The request was made earlier this month, with over 100 residents signing a petition in support of the initiative.

Community Support for Pickleball

Eduardo Vedani, a member of the pickleball group, presented the petition to the Council. He emphasized the importance of the sport in fostering community connections.

“We have found that we have been able to integrate the community. It brings people together of all ages,”. Currently, the group plays at Calusa Park, where they share two tennis courts part-time.(Eduardo Vedani)

Proposed Location and Benefits

Roberto Cortez, another member of the group, suggested a portion of the Village Green off Fernwood Road near the dog park for the new courts. He explained that this location could accommodate two pickleball courts, requiring about 3,000 square feet.

“What is interesting is that it has a very low impact on trees, very low impact even on the walk road around the park,” (Roberto Cortez).

Interest in Pickleball in the Community

Leandro Beer added that approximately 50 to 75 people would be interested in playing pickleball at the Village Green. The proposed courts would not only provide more space for the sport but also enhance community engagement among residents of all ages.

Significance of the Proposal

The request to dedicate space for pickleball highlights the growing popularity of the sport in Key Biscayne. If approved, this initiative could lead to increased community interaction and provide a recreational outlet for residents.

As the Village Council considers the proposal, it reflects the ongoing interest in expanding recreational facilities to accommodate diverse activities. The outcome could influence future community events and initiatives centered around pickleball and other sports.
