Johor State to Enhance Pickleball Facilities: The Johor state government has allocated RM500,000 to build new pickleball courts, aiming to boost the sport’s popularity. This announcement was made by Johor youth, sports, entrepreneur development, and cooperatives committee chairman Mohd Hairi Mad Shah during the 2025 state budget presentation.

Growing Popularity of Pickleball

Mohd Hairi shared this news in response to a question from Azizul Bachok (BN-Tiram) about initiatives to introduce non-mainstream sports in schools. He noted that pickleball, which combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping pong, is gaining popularity worldwide.

“Pickleball is a sport created in 1965 by three Americans who wanted to have a family-friendly game.” – (Mohd Hairi)

According to Mohd Hairi, pickleball’s simple rules make it accessible for players of all ages and skill levels. The sport has also seen international competitions, including the Asia Pickleball Open in Phuket, Thailand, where Malaysia sent 46 players who won nine medals.

Support from the State Government

Mohd Hairi mentioned that Selangor has already included pickleball in the upcoming 2026 Malaysia Games. The construction of new pickleball courts will be managed by the Johor Stadium Corporation to ensure facilities are well-utilized and revenue is maximized.

He added that the state government is committed to nurturing sporting talents and promoting recreational sports.

“Recreational sports can make a positive impact or provide a good objective. Through the Xtif Johor agenda, recreational sports can be supported for locals to practise a healthy lifestyle.” – (Mohd Hairi)
