2025 Pickleball Shift: Ben Johns and Collin Johns Explore Separate Opportunities

Ben Johns and Collin Johns, renowned as the “Johns Bros,” have decided not to team up in men’s doubles for the 2025 pickleball season. The duo, known for their formidable partnership, achieved numerous titles and dominated the sport in recent years. However, evolving gameplay and personal adjustments prompted their decision to part ways.

A Stellar Partnership Faces Change

Despite challenges, Ben and Collin Johns maintained the top spot in men’s doubles rankings throughout 2024. Their win rate of 80% in 2024 fell short of their 90% record in 2023. They also faced a five-month drought without a PPA men’s doubles gold medal and missed the playoffs with their Carolina team.

The changing dynamics of professional pickleball in 2024 played a significant role. The sport shifted toward power-driven gameplay, highlighted by players like Zane Navratil and Erik Lange. This new style emphasized speed and two-hand backhands, leaving little room for the traditionally successful third-shot drop strategy.

Adjusting to Evolving Gameplay

The Johns brothers, celebrated for their finesse in the dink game, faced challenges adapting to the power-focused style. While their long dink rallies remained effective, their success rate declined compared to previous years. Collin struggled more with the shift, impacting their overall performance.

In light of these changes, Ben and Collin decided to explore new opportunities individually. Ben addressed the split, stating,

“We have achieved so much as a team, and I am really proud of what we have accomplished. Change-ups in life and in sports can be a refreshing thing.”(Ben Johns)

Looking Ahead to New Beginnings

Ben expressed optimism about the future, emphasizing the benefits of this decision.

“We feel this decision will help us find new purpose, create variety, and reengage us in the sport we love so much. This is not necessarily the end of our partnership for good. Just a healthy adjustment for the time being,” (Ben Johns).

The Johns Bros remain committed to their legacy in pickleball.

“We’ll always be brothers first and part of each other’s pickleball legacy,” (Ben Johns,

highlighting their enduring bond. Both players are excited to see what 2025 holds as they embark on their separate journeys in the sport.
