James Ignatowich Breaks Down Winning Strategies for Non-Traditional Grips

James Ignatowich Breaks Down Winning Strategies: Pro pickleball player James Ignatowich has offered advice for players using a semi-western grip at the kitchen line. In a recent video, he explained how to make the most of this grip style despite its challenges.

Ignatowich noted that while he prefers the continental grip, players can still succeed with a semi-western grip if they adapt their technique.

“So I see a lot of players in my clinic using semi-western grips at the kitchen. And that’s not how I would teach it, but there are some ways to take advantage of having a semi-western grip,” (James Ignatowich).

Adjusting to Semi-Western Grip

Ignatowich highlighted specific adjustments for players using a semi-western grip. He advised focusing on forehands, even at higher positions.

“With a semi-western grip, I think you should be hitting forehands almost kind of to your neck level,” (James Ignatowich).

Additionally, he emphasized the importance of mastering a two-handed backhand counter.

“I think it’s essentially important to use a two-handed backhand counter pretty much all the time unless you really feel comfortable like this,” (James Ignatowich).

Movement and Technique

Movement is another crucial element for players with a semi-western grip. Ignatowich encouraged players to work on sliding quickly to either side.

“I think the two things are getting very comfortable sliding to your left or sliding to your right quickly with the semi-western grip,” (James Ignatowich).

He also pointed out the benefits of the grip in specific scenarios. “You can reap the benefits of a mini pancake here, and then some great topspin forehand speed-ups,” he explained.

Why It Matters

Ignatowich’s advice addresses a common challenge for players using less conventional grips in pickleball. By adapting their technique and movement, players can improve their game and make the semi-western grip an asset rather than a limitation.

His insights serve as a valuable resource for pickleball enthusiasts seeking to refine their skills and overcome technical obstacles.
