UPA Introduces Gold Card to Boost Professional Pickleball with Streamlined Event Access

UPA Introduces Gold Card: The United Pickleball Association (UPA) has launched the Gold Card to help define pro players and streamline competition entry. The card offers automatic access to main draws at PPA Tour events and eligibility for Major League Pickleball (MLP) teams, starting in 2025.

What the Gold Card Offers

All UPA-signed players will begin the year with a Gold Card, retaining it as long as they meet their contracts. Players with the card can bypass the increasingly crowded qualifying rounds, which have grown with more aspiring pros entering tournaments.

To earn a Gold Card, players must succeed in the new PPA Tour Challenger Series or achieve a top-30 ranking in mixed or gender doubles. This system creates a clearer path to professional status, addressing a rising demand in the sport.

Comparison to Other Sports

The Gold Card is similar to the PGA Tour Card in golf, which allows golfers to compete at the highest level without requalifying for events. Golf’s Korn Ferry Tour serves as a pathway for aspiring players, with top finishers earning Tour Cards each season.

Likewise, the PPA Tour Challenger Series now serves as a development system. Top performers at the PPA Challenger Dallas Showdown will become eligible for Gold Cards, marking a significant step in their pickleball careers.

Expert Insights

The introduction of the Gold Card comes as more players strive to compete at a professional level. In 2024, pro qualifiers accounted for 16% of all PPA registrants, up from just 7% in 2023.

Impact and What’s Next

The Gold Card system is expected to bring clarity to the professional pickleball landscape and attract new talent. However, its implementation could pose challenges, including maintaining fairness and managing an expanding pool of competitors.

As pickleball continues its rise, the Gold Card represents a step toward building a more structured and competitive environment for players aiming for the sport’s top tiers.

News in Brief: UPA Introduces Gold Card

The UPA’s new Gold Card offers pro pickleball players automatic entry to PPA Tour events and MLP eligibility. Players qualify through contracts, top rankings, or success in the Challenger Series. Similar to golf’s PGA Tour Card, this system streamlines professional pathways, attracting talent while addressing rising competition in the sport.
