Ten secondary schools in Sibu, Sarawak, are gearing up to introduce pickleball clubs as part of their co-curricular programmes, thanks to a joint effort between the Sibu Pickleball Association and the Sibu Education Department. Students participating in the programme will also earn co-curricular activity points.
Collaboration to Boost Pickleball in Sarawak
This initiative aims to create a solid foundation for the development of pickleball in Sibu and across Sarawak. A recent briefing conducted by the association with school representatives saw positive responses, although final approval for the clubs will depend on the respective school administrations.
Sibu Pickleball Association president Joseph Chieng identified the schools involved: SMK Sacred Heart, SMK Methodist, SMK Bukit Assek, Catholic High School, SMK St Elizabeth, SM Wong Nai Siong, SMK Deshon, SMK Tung Hua, SMK Bandar Sibu, and SMK Sungai Merah.
Equipping Schools and Organizing Competitions
To ensure a smooth rollout, the association will provide each school with essential pickleball equipment, including four paddles, six pickleballs, and a portable net.
Additionally, plans are underway to organize the first Sibu Inter-School Pickleball Tournament at the end of the year, offering students an opportunity to showcase their skills in a competitive setting.

Expanding the Sport’s Reach in Sarawak
Chieng emphasized the importance of nurturing local pickleball talent through this programme, which aligns with the broader goal of promoting the sport in Sarawak.

The association plans to continue working closely with the education department and schools to ensure the success of the programme. Chieng also called on more schools to join the initiative, helping to expand pickleball’s reach and impact across the region.
