Kiama’s First Pickleball Tournament: Kiama’s first-ever pickleball competition is set to take place on Saturday, January 11, from 2 PM to 4 PM at the Kiama Leisure Centre. The family-friendly event, run by Jones Co. Tennis, encourages players of all experience levels to join the fun.
Pickleball combines long rallies with a mix of soft and fast-paced shots, focusing on strategy and finesse over athleticism. Played on a smaller court with a modified net, the sport is accessible to all ages and skill levels, offering an inclusive experience.
The tournament will follow a double round-robin format with teams of two to four players. Participants without a team will be paired up. Final point scores will determine winners, but additional non-skill-based prizes will also be awarded. Registration costs $20 per person, and all team members must sign up on the Jones Co. Tennis website.
Community Engagement
Jones Co. Tennis Director and coach Daniel Jones expressed excitement about the growing local interest in pickleball.
“It has been great to see the community interest in our weekly pickleball sessions, especially the families that come together for it,”(Jones Co. Tennis Director).
Jones also highlighted the enthusiasm among adult participants, saying,
“The interest from adults is particularly noteworthy as it can be hard to get adults involved in organized activities due to life commitments.”(Jones Co. Tennis Director)
Ongoing Pickleball Opportunities
Jones Co. Tennis hosts weekly pickleball sessions at Kiama High School. These sessions, designed for all skill levels, run on Tuesday and Thursday evenings during the school term and Thursdays during the summer holidays.
Significance of the Event
