Building Community Through Sport: Dr. Joe Russell’s Passion for Pickleball

Dr. Joe Russell’s Passion for Pickleball: Joe Russell, a physician and hospitalist, is actively engaged in the Tahlequah community as a sponsored pickleball athlete. Originally from Locust Grove, Russell returned to Northeast Oklahoma to enjoy the small-town feel and friendliness of the people.

“We still have a lot of activities and shopping to do in the area without having to travel to a bigger city,” ( Joe Russell).

Medical Career Path

Russell initially planned to work in preventative medicine but found his passion in local hospitals. After completing medical school, he chose the Family Medicine Residency at Northeastern Health System.

“My career over the last several years has changed a lot,” ( Joe Russell).

He appreciates expanding services and working closely with residents and medical students. For those considering a medical career, Russell encourages them to explore the field.

“There will always be options to change careers and change paths while staying in health care,” ( Joe Russell).

Journey into Pickleball

Russell’s interest in pickleball began when he was already playing racquetball and ping pong. After much persuasion from friends, he finally tried the sport and quickly fell in love with it.

“Since then, it’s turned into a family affair, with my kids and multiple family members playing,” ( Joe Russell).

As a sponsored ambassador for Engage Pickleball, Russell provides quality equipment at discounted rates for local players.

“Engage has a good reputation for helping sponsor and fundraise for community events,” ( Joe Russell).

Growing the Pickleball Community

Russell is active in both the Tahlequah and Tulsa pickleball communities. This year, he initiated an after-school program in Tulsa for staff and parents, which has been well-received.

“Most of the teachers and parents had never played before and enjoyed it a lot,”( Joe Russell).

The program will soon expand to include children, with plans to introduce the model to Tahlequah next year.

Beyond Pickleball

In addition to his medical career and pickleball involvement, Russell enjoys skiing, hiking, fishing, and spending time outdoors with his family.

“I enjoy most things outdoors, for sure,”( Joe Russell).

Russell’s engagement in the community through pickleball not only promotes health and activity but also strengthens family bonds and local connections.
