Connor Garnett Challenges Pickleball Coaching Norms: As pickleball grows in popularity, many new players are turning to coaches for advice. However, World No. 3 men’s singles player Connor Garnett recently revealed some common myths that coaches might be passing on to their students. In a YouTube video, Garnett explains what to do instead.
Don’t Always Take the Ball Out of the Air in the Kitchen
One common piece of advice Garnett challenges is the idea that players should always take the ball out of the air when it enters the kitchen. While it’s important to be aggressive, Garnett says that players should step back and let the ball bounce when it’s not possible to be aggressive.
“You don’t want to reach and pop the ball up,” Garnett explained. “If I have to hit up, I probably should be taking it out of the air.” This method reduces the risk of giving opponents a high ball to hit back at you.
Footwork is Key
Garnett emphasizes the importance of footwork when deciding whether to take the ball out of the air or let it bounce. If players have quick footwork and are on the balls of their feet, they will be able to adjust and remain aggressive, even if they misjudge the ball.
“When you’re looking to take it out of the air, even if you misjudge it, if you have quick footwork and you’re on the balls of your feet, you’re able to step back and still be aggressive with that shot,” Garnett added.
Impact of the New Advice
These insights challenge traditional coaching methods and encourage players to be more thoughtful about their movements.
Garnett’s tips can help players avoid making common mistakes and improve their overall game by focusing on footwork and shot selection.
