The first Holiday Pickleball Classic at the Highlands Sports Complex raised $30,000 for the Robert Sonneborn Family WVU Medicine Children’s Outpatient Center. Held over two days, the tournament united the Ohio Valley Pickleball Club and WVU Medicine in a successful fundraising effort.
Successful Inaugural Holiday Pickleball Classic
The event, a fresh initiative to support the center, drew widespread participation. Doug Harrison, CEO of WVU Medicine, Wheeling Hospital, highlighted the success, saying, “Far exceeded our expectations, on a fundraising effort. Especially for a new idea and a new concept. It turned out to be a wonderful, wonderful event. People from all over the area participated.”
J.T. Thomas, Vice President of the Ohio Valley Pickleball Club, expressed pride in the cause, stating, “What better cause is there than children of the Ohio Valley and children in general. Anytime we can help the community and especially the children of our community, I’m on board.”
Hospital officials plan to make the tournament an annual tradition. Construction on the outpatient center is expected to begin later this year, furthering its mission to serve children in the community.
