Pickleball Safety Tips: How Seniors Can Stay Injury-Free on the Pickleball Court

Pickleball Safety Tips: As pickleball grows in popularity, especially among adults over 50, experts warn that the rise in injuries related to the sport is also increasing. Dr. Brian Cole, an orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist, explains that many beginners, particularly seniors, are experiencing strains, sprains, and even more serious injuries.

Pickleball and Injury Risk

Pickleball, which combines elements of ping-pong and tennis, has quickly become a favorite sport for many, including older adults.

But as more people take up the sport, injuries are becoming more common. Dr. Cole treats injuries such as sprains in the legs and ankles, as well as rotator cuff injuries. In some cases, he also sees fractures and concussions.

Prevention Tips

To avoid injury, Dr. Cole advises players to first consult with their primary care physician and possibly a physical therapist, especially if they haven’t been very active. Many older adults may have undiagnosed health conditions that could increase the risk of injury.

A proper warm-up is key to preventing injuries. Dr. Cole recommends a 10-minute warm-up, starting with light jogging or jumping jacks to get the blood flowing.

Follow this with arm circles, shoulder rotations, and leg swings. These exercises help prepare the body for movement and improve flexibility.

Drills and Equipment

In addition to warming up, Dr. Cole suggests practicing a few coordination drills. The side-to-side shuffle and cross-step drills can help build agility and coordination.

These drills should take about 15 minutes and will prepare players for the quick movements required in pickleball.

When it comes to equipment, Dr. Cole suggests using lightweight paddles, which are easier on the arms. For footwear, he advises players to choose shoes suited to their playing environment.

Outdoor shoes should have a herringbone pattern for better grip, while indoor shoes should have thinner, lighter soles for hardwood courts.

News in Brief: Pickleball Safety Tips

With its growing popularity, pickleball is attracting more pickleball players, especially seniors. However, players must be cautious and take the necessary steps to avoid injury. By warming up, practicing drills, and using the right equipment, players can enjoy the game safely and reduce their risk of harm.
