Sofia Sewing’s Journey: From Professional Tennis to Pickleball Success

Sofia Sewing’s Journey: Sofia Sewing made a strong debut in pickleball by winning a silver medal in women’s singles at the APP Fort Lauderdale Open last week. The 25-year-old, who transitioned from professional tennis to pickleball in 2024, pushed Megan Fudge to the limit in the finals, showcasing her athleticism and competitive drive.

Background and Rise in Pickleball

Sofia Sewing’s athletic journey began in Doral, Florida, where she started playing tennis at age 8. As a young tennis prodigy, she became homeschooled to focus on training.

By 2014, Sofia had already achieved major victories, including back-to-back Eddie Herr titles in 14s and 16s. She continued her rise in tennis, earning a top-125 doubles ranking and competing in 37 countries.

After battling knee injuries in 2023, Sofia made the decision to retire from professional tennis and pursue pickleball full-time. She picked up a pickleball paddle in April 2024 and quickly impressed the community. Her debut in pickleball included playing in the APP NYC and PPA Bristol tournaments, where she earned recognition for her talent and potential.

APP Fort Lauderdale Open Performance

At the APP Fort Lauderdale Open, Sofia showed remarkable progress, defeating top players such as Helen To, Amanda Hendry, and Daria Walczak. Despite battling knee pain, she was able to deliver impressive groundstrokes and agility, playing with elite pickleball technique. Her run to the final saw her improve drastically from earlier matches, including her first-round loss to Megan Fudge in the APP NYC.

In the final, Sofia faced Megan Fudge, who ultimately won with a score of 14-16, 11-15. Despite the loss, Sofia’s performance demonstrated her rapid growth in the sport and her ability to compete at a high level.

The Road Ahead

Looking ahead, Sofia plans to play in multiple pickleball tournaments in 2025, including APP and PWR events. She is particularly excited about competing internationally again, something she missed from her tennis days. Sofia will continue her training at the pickleball facility in Boca Raton, Florida, where she has made great strides in just a short period.

Her journey in pickleball is still in its early stages, but Sofia Sewing has already shown that she has the potential to become a top player in the sport. With her dedication and athletic background, she is poised for success in the years to come.
