Mastering the Pickleball Backswing: A Step-by-Step Guide with Ed Ju and Martin Emmrich

Mastering the Pickleball Backswing: Many pickleball players come from different sports backgrounds and may struggle with certain techniques, such as the proper backswing. Content creator Ed Ju collaborated with pro Martin Emmrich to provide a step-by-step guide to mastering this essential skill.

Understanding the Backswing

Emmrich explained common mistakes players make when preparing for a backswing. “Often players move towards the ball, plant their feet, then go to hit their backswing,” he said. “But, then you can’t execute the ball.” Instead, he recommended that players swivel their bodies while keeping their focus on the ball before swinging.

Ju initially aimed to extend his arm fully for the backswing. However, Emmrich suggested that he soften his arm to about 70 percent extension. This adjustment helps to drive the ball forward effectively. Emmrich compared hitting a powerful drive with the backswing to a train on a railway. “By envisioning yourself propelling forward, moving your arm with the ball, and then stepping forward after you’ve already made contact, the ball will progress forward,” he explained.

Practicing the Technique

To help Ju improve, Emmrich fed him several balls. Ju quickly realized he was starting his backswing too late. To address this, he served a few times to become comfortable with the further back extension during a rally.

Emmrich advised that Ju should maintain a one to two-inch gap between his arm and torso when executing the backswing. This ensures that the body remains relaxed and allows for full-body motion, which is crucial for high-level players seeking control.

After additional practice, Ju began to grasp the technique.

Drills for Improvement

For players at home, Emmrich suggested starting with a stationary ball to practice footwork. Once comfortable, find a partner to toss balls to improve both the backswing and footwork. To elevate the training further, he recommended using a ball machine set to alternate shots to the left and right.

Emmrich also highlighted the importance of studying pro players. “You’re not learning pickleball, or tennis, or any sport if you just look at the excitement. If you pinpoint one player and watch them, that’s how you learn it,” he stated. He shared that he learned by studying Ben Johns and how he consistently made successful shots.

Elevating Your Game

By focusing on technique and learning from the pros, players can significantly enhance their game. Following Emmrich’s advice and implementing these drills will help pickleball enthusiasts refine their skills and enjoy the sport even more.
