Diagnosis and Treatment
Wilson’s condition prevents his brain from properly regulating his breathing, leading to irregular patterns and hyperventilation. He explained that this disorder has caused persistent shortness of breath.
“They diagnosed me with what’s called a breathing pattern disorder, so basically my brain is not telling my lungs to breathe properly. I’m breathing eratically, causing me to hyperventilate, and just not breathing properly and constantly feeling short of breath, so we’re very thankful that we have a piece of the puzzle.” – (Wilson)
Wilson will return to National Jewish Health monthly for continued treatment. He expressed relief at finally having a diagnosis and believes his condition is treatable with time and care.
“I’m still going back there probably once a month for treatment just to keep digging, just to get to the bottom of all this. It was a long time coming getting an answer like that, so we have some hope now that it’s treatable and it’s something I can work through over time.” – (Wilson)
Community Support and Future Plans
Wilson’s update quickly drew support from fellow players and fans, who flooded social media with encouraging messages. He acknowledged the outpouring of kindness and shared his gratitude for the pickleball community.
“In the meantime, we’re still going to be involved with pickleball. We’re going to be more active on social media, maybe traveling some. I have some exciting announcements coming over the next couple of weeks. As a family, we’re just so thankful for everyone’s support.” – (Wilson)
“The pickleball world has changed our lives, like it changes a lot of people’s lives. Even though I’m not on court, still the support that I’ve gotten, that we’ve gotten from people I know, people I don’t know, has been amazing, so we’re excited to keep moving forward and hoping to get back involved on the court with the PPA Tour.” – (Wilson)
Brittany Wilson also shared her thoughts on the difficult journey their family has faced in recent months.
“This journey has been kind of crazy for our family. It totally flipped our life upside down. It was really hard walking through this, and Thomas too not being able to play and do what he loves was hard, but we’ve been really blessed to work with some top doctors finally at National Jewish Health in Denver. They work with Olympic athletes, so we are so blessed that they have taken on Thomas’ case and helped us come up with a diagnosis, and still trying to figure out more as well regarding his health.” (Wilson)
She also thanked fans for their support, noting that they had received messages, Uber gift cards, and other thoughtful gestures from the pickleball community.
“We just personally want to thank all the fans that have sent such sweet messages to us. People have been sending us Uber gift cards, just all kinds of really nice, thoughtful things while we’ve been going through this, and it’s just meant so much to us.” – (Wilson)
