Pickleball’s Growing Appeal Among Tennis Players
Several former tennis professionals have transitioned into pickleball in recent years, with Bouchard, a 2014 Wimbledon finalist, among the most notable names. The sport has gained traction among former tennis players due to its competitive nature and strategic gameplay.
Bouchard explained that pickleball, particularly in singles, is physically challenging, requiring players to be in top shape and compete in multiple matches within a single day.
“Pickleball pros are very close to tennis pros. Everyone’s athletic, especially in singles. It is very tough physically so you have to be in shape and often [one player will] play multiple matches in a day which is very different from tennis as well.” – (Bouchard)
A Career in Both Sports
Bouchard, who remains active in both tennis and pickleball, has continued to showcase her versatility across both sports. She first made history in 2014 as the first Canadian-born player representing Canada to reach a Grand Slam singles final at Wimbledon. She also reached the semifinals at the 2014 Australian Open and French Open.
Her transition to pickleball has been marked by success, including a notable win over current World No. 4 Lea Jansen. Bouchard competes in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles events, demonstrating her adaptability and competitiveness across different formats of the sport.
“I have total respect for all the pros out there,” Bouchard added, recognizing the skill and dedication of professional pickleball players.
Impact and Future Prospects
Bouchard’s participation in professional tennis and pickleball continues to generate interest in the latter sport, drawing more fans and athletes to the game. As pickleball gains mainstream recognition, the involvement of high-profile players like Bouchard further solidifies its credibility.
With Pickleball Slam 3 approaching, her performance alongside Roddick against Agassi and Graf is expected to be a highly anticipated matchup, adding excitement to the event.
