Strict Penalties for Targeting Violations

Under the new rule, if a player intentionally or recklessly strikes an opponent’s head or neck with a powerful shot, a technical foul will be assessed.

The offending team will concede a point to the opponent, and the player will receive a minimum fine of $2,500. Additionally, both teams will be warned against retaliation.

A second offense by the same team will result in a $5,000 fine for the offending player and an automatic match forfeit. If the opposing team retaliates, they will also receive a technical foul, point penalty, and a minimum fine of $5,000. Further targeting violations will result in additional disciplinary actions, including possible suspensions.

Ensuring Safety and Sportsmanship

The organization emphasized that while the game is becoming faster and more aggressive, player safety and respect remain top priorities.

“While the modern game has become faster and more aggressive, respect for opponents remains paramount. Players are encouraged to compete with intensity but must avoid endangering fellow competitors. UPA-A officials will assess intent, ball trajectory, and overall gameplay context when determining violations.” – (UPA-A)

Repeat offenders or those committing particularly severe violations may face additional fines or suspensions at the discretion of tournament officials and the UPA-A disciplinary committee.

This rule is designed to preserve both player safety and the integrity of professional competition, ensuring that pickleball remains a sport built on skill, strategy, and sportsmanship.” – (UPA-A)

Maintaining Integrity in Competition

The new rule aims to preserve the integrity of professional pickleball by discouraging dangerous play. The organization’s focus remains on skill, strategy, and sportsmanship to ensure a fair and competitive environment for all players.
