Susanna Bar’s Third Shot Strategy in Pickleball—When to Drop, Drive, or Push!

Susanna Bar’s Third Shot Strategy in Pickleball: In a recent session at Flying Pickle Academy, Susanna Bar focused on teaching players how to make effective decisions for their third shots in pickleball. The key options discussed were dropping, driving, or pushing the ball, depending on the return shot’s placement.

Choosing the Right Shot

Bar explained that the decision to hit a drop shot is ideal when players are behind the baseline. This position gives them time to move closer to the kitchen line after the shot. “If I’m behind the baseline, I probably want to drop the ball,” Bar stated. This strategy allows players to gain better positioning for the next shot.

When players can step into the court due to a shorter return, driving the ball becomes a viable option. Bar noted, “If I can step into the court at this stage, I can drive the ball.” This technique can catch opponents off guard, allowing players to advance to the kitchen line more quickly.

Handling Short Returns

Bar emphasized the importance of recognizing when to push the ball instead of driving it. If the return is too short, players should approach the ball and push it low to maintain control. “The problem with driving when it gets too short is we tend to hit it high,” she warned. This often allows the opponents to attack.

The session included drills where Bar and her students practiced these techniques. Partner drills simulated different return distances, helping players develop their decision-making skills under pressure. “The hardest part is making that decision quickly enough,” Bar remarked.

Significance of Skill Development

Mastering these third-shot techniques is crucial for players looking to improve their game. By effectively choosing between dropping, driving, or pushing the ball, players can enhance their positioning and increase their chances of winning points. Bar encourages players to practice these skills consistently to become more adept in matches.
