Darius Christian Embraces Pickleball: Versatility defines Darius Christian, as a Grammy-winning musician and as a rising pickleball player. Known for performing with Macklemore, Mumford & Sons, and other top artists, Christian has played on some of the world’s biggest stages, including Saturday Night Live’s 50th anniversary. But when he’s not touring, he’s often found on an entirely different kind of stage—the pickleball court.
A Chance Introduction to Pickleball
Christian’s journey into pickleball began two years ago at a Funky Pickleball event in New Jersey, where he was performing on stage while a nearby court engaged the crowd. Intrigued by the game, he accepted an invitation to play during a break, even setting music to match his first shots.
Like many, Christian discovered pickleball during the pandemic. When live music paused, he started playing table tennis with family in Baltimore, which soon led to an interest in pickleball.
“My partner at the time suggested I try it, and I kind of brushed it off. Then, the first time I hit the ball, that was it—I was obsessed.” – (Christian)
Pickleball Becomes a New Passion
Christian’s initial curiosity quickly turned into a serious commitment. Now, he travels with his paddle wherever he goes, using PlayTimeScheduler.com to find local courts.
His love for the sport continues to grow as he works toward his coaching certification and regularly competes in tournaments.
“Pickleball is a prism of different lanes. There’s the community side, the chess-like strategy, and the constant learning curve. I love it all.” – (Christian)
Even while on tour, Christian prioritizes pickleball, checking into hotels and immediately asking where the nearest courts are.
Representation and Inclusivity in Pickleball
As a Black musician and athlete, Christian sees both the diversity and the gaps within pickleball.
“At the rec level, it’s wonderfully diverse—especially in Southern California, where I play with people from so many different cultural backgrounds. But at the pro level, there are only a few Black and Brown players, and that needs to change.” – (Christian)
Beyond professional representation, Christian has also observed shifts in recreational play.
“As the sport grows, we have to check ourselves and make sure we keep the welcoming spirit that makes pickleball special. If we want to grow it, we can’t turn it into some exclusive club.” – (Christian)
Pickleball’s Role in His Life
Pickleball has been about more than competition for Christian—it has played a vital role in his personal journey.
“Pickleball has been a huge part of my sobriety journey. I’ve been alcohol- and marijuana-free for almost four years, and the clarity and happiness that pickleball brings me is unmatched.” – (Christian)
With a strong passion for inclusivity, Christian hopes to inspire more diverse communities to take up the game and experience its benefits.
Advice for New Players
As he continues his journey toward becoming a certified coach, Christian shares valuable advice for newcomers to the sport:
- Know Your Why: “Are you here for fun? Competition? Exercise? Find the environment that fits your goals.”
- Embrace the Learning Process: “Apply a collegiate mindset to the game. Watch pros, study form, and seek out better players to learn from.”
- Keep It Fun: “You don’t need expensive gear—just a paddle, good pickleball shoes, and an open mind.”
