Master Fast Pickleball Volleys with DJ Howard’s Expert Pickleball Training Drill

Master Fast Pickleball Volleys: Pickleball mental coach DJ Howard has introduced a new training drill called “Slinky Volleys” to improve players’ directional control while volleying on the move. This drill aims to help players build better balance and coordination on the court.

The Slinky Volleys Drill in Pickleball

The Slinky Volleys drill starts with players positioned at the blue lines on the court, with no movement allowed to the sideline.

The goal is to hit volleys diagonally while moving across the court. Players take one step after each volley until they reach the opposite side of the court. Then, they reverse the movement and return to the starting position.

“By adding movement, you start to simulate a more realistic point scenario. It’s not just about hitting volleys back and forth in place. We want to challenge players to control the ball while staying balanced and in motion.” – (Howard)

Why This Drill Works

Unlike traditional stationary volley drills, Slinky Volleys encourage dynamic movement and help players improve their coordination, stability, and directional control.

By practicing this drill, players can prepare for real match scenarios, where fast movement and precise volleys are essential. Howard emphasizes that the exercise is not about slamming the ball, but controlling its pace while cooperating with your partner.

John, a participant in the drill, shared his experience: “I’ve never seen a drill like this before. It’s way better than just going straight across. It adds movement and makes it feel like a real point.”

Tips for Success

To make the most of this drill, players should focus on balance and proper footwork. Howard suggests using the legs for stability and keeping the paddle in front to maintain control. Players should also resist the urge to hit high volleys out of bounds and instead, demonstrate discipline by leaving balls that are too high.

By integrating Slinky Volleys into their training, pickleball players can develop better movement patterns, improve their game, and be more effective in match play.

This drill, though simple, serves as a foundation for improving key aspects of the game, making it an excellent tool for pickleball enthusiasts looking to hone their skills.
