Riley Bohnert Chases Pickleball Glory By Embracing the Challenges of Professional Pickleball

Riley Bohnert Chases Pickleball Glory: Riley Bohnert, a rising pickleball player, has chosen to pursue a professional career over attending college. The decision came after a breakthrough tournament in New York, where she won a bronze medal with Emily Ackrian. Supported by her family, she has embraced the challenge of competing at the highest level.

A Bold Decision for the Future

At 19 years old, Riley faced a tough choice: college or professional pickleball. The New York tournament became the turning point in her decision-making.

“I had been going back and forth between college and pickleball. But after that tournament, I just knew—I had to do this now.” – (riley)

Her parents initially had concerns about financial stability and long-term career prospects. However, they ultimately decided to support her passion. “We had the usual concerns about stability,” said Chris Bohnert, her father.

“But when my wife and I really thought about it, we realized this was what made Riley happiest.” – (Chris)

Balancing Coaching and Fatherhood

Chris has played a dual role in Riley’s journey, both as a father and a coach. Coaching a family member is challenging, but their relationship has evolved to make it work.

“I love telling people he’s my coach. I don’t know if he likes it as much, but I do.” – (riley)

Chris admitted he had to change his coaching style to fit Riley’s needs.

“I had to shift my approach. Riley thrives when she’s having fun, so my role became more about supporting her rather than just instructing her.” – (chris)

Despite the challenges, they have shared incredible moments on the court, including comeback victories that tested Riley’s resilience.

Facing Fear and Doubt

Even with early success, self-doubt remains a challenge for Riley. She worries about disappointing her family and whether she made the right decision.

“My biggest fear is disappointing my parents. I moved to Florida to pursue pickleball, and there’s always that worry—what if it doesn’t work out?” – (riley)

Her father, however, has no doubts about her journey.

“She’s not failing. She’s out there making her own way, and we couldn’t be more proud.” – (chris)

To stay motivated, Riley reminds herself of her family’s mantra.

“Every little thing is going to be all right.” – (riley)

Finding a Home in Next-Gen Pickleball

A key part of Riley’s development has been the Next Gen series, a tournament circuit for young players transitioning into professional pickleball.

“I tell everyone—Next Gen feels like home. It’s more than just a competition; it’s a family.” – (riley)

Chris praised the program, calling it one of the best things in pickleball for young players.

“Watching Riley and others grow through this program has been incredible.” – (chris)

A Champion’s Mindset

Riley’s success has been built on resilience and perseverance. From her early days competing in junior triathlons to facing high-pressure pickleball matches, she has developed a fearless approach.

“I actually love being down in matches. It doesn’t make me nervous—it excites me. The game is never over, and I always believe I can fight my way back.” – (riley)

Chris believes this mindset will help her handle any challenge.

“She learned to win at every level, and that built her confidence. Now, whether she’s down in a match or facing an uncertain future, she knows how to push forward.” – (chris)

Looking Ahead

As Riley continues her journey, she remains focused on honing her game and building her career. With her family’s support and lessons learned from early struggles, she is determined to carve out a lasting place in professional pickleball. For Chris, seeing Riley chase her dream is the most rewarding part.

“As a parent, you always worry, but at the end of the day, the goal is to raise happy, resilient kids. Riley is proving every day that she’s on the right path.” – (chris)
