Pickle Space Fuses Pickleball and Lifestyle in a Trendsetting Malaysian Venue

Pickle Space Fuses Pickleball and Lifestyle: A new pickleball venue in Malaysia, Pickle Space, is redefining the sport by combining premium pickleball courts with a full-fledged café. Opened in December, the facility is operated by Mads Group, which also runs the Oh My Belly restaurant chain. Located in Subang, Pickle Space aims to offer more than just a sports venue by integrating fitness with dining in a stylish, Moroccan-inspired setting.

A Unique Take on Pickleball

Pickle Space stands out in Malaysia’s growing pickleball scene by offering more than just courts. The venue features a café from Oh My Belly, serving the same popular menu as its other outlets. The idea came from Jef Yap, director of Mads Group, who saw an opportunity to create a lifestyle hub.

“When my team and I first played pickleball, we were captivated by its challenging yet enjoyable nature—it’s a sport that hooks you in,” Jef said. Recognizing the sport’s rising popularity, he converted an empty factory space initially intended for badminton into a pickleball venue with an eatery.

However, setting up the pickleball courts was a challenge. The original flooring cracked after a few games, requiring three rounds of renovations to find the right materials. Despite the setbacks, the team successfully built a durable playing surface that ensures a quality experience for players.

Comfort, Style, and Growing Popularity

Pickle Space’s design is inspired by the relaxed, Bohemian atmosphere of Bali, offering an inviting space where visitors can play, watch games, or unwind with a meal. The pickleball courts are air-conditioned, making the venue comfortable despite Malaysia’s hot climate. Court rental prices range from RM50 to RM70 per hour, with paddle rentals at RM5 and balls available for RM10.

Jef believes the combination of premium pickleball courts and a high-quality café sets Pickle Space apart from other venues.

“Sure, the rise in pickleball venues brings some challenges, but we’re not fazed. Pickle Space stands out by blending a premium café experience with our courts—players can refuel with great food right after a match.”-(Jef Yap)

Customer feedback has influenced ongoing improvements, such as the addition of extra netting to prevent balls from reaching the dining area.

Looking Ahead

Despite concerns that pickleball might be a passing trend, Jef remains confident in its long-term appeal.

“Sports are a core part of people’s lifestyles—whether it’s badminton, swimming, or cycling, once you’re hooked, it sticks. Pickleball is no different; its accessibility and social appeal make it a habit, not a fad.”-(Jef Yap)

Since its launch, Pickle Space has seen strong demand, with courts often fully booked. Many customers stay to enjoy the café, while others visit solely for the food. Jef hopes to host tournaments, meetups, and corporate events to further establish Pickle Space as a top destination in Subang.

Although there are no immediate plans to expand Pickle Space into a chain, Jef’s focus remains on perfecting this first location. With its blend of fitness, social engagement, and dining, Pickle Space represents a bold step in transforming Oh My Belly into a true lifestyle brand.
