Malaysia to Host Historic Pickleball Grand Slam 2025, Eyeing RM31.6 Million Tourism Boost

Malaysia to Host Historic Pickleball Grand Slam 2025: The Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) has confirmed its role in organizing and promoting the MATTA Malaysia Pickleball Grand Slam 2025 (MPG2025). Scheduled for October 7-20, the tournament will take place at PIKABOL in Kuching and is expected to draw top international players and sports tourists.

Historic Tournament Set for October

MATTA and the Malaysia Pickleball Association signed a Memorandum of Understanding to develop pickleball and boost Malaysia’s sports tourism industry. This will be the first major pickleball tournament in the country, with around 1,350 participants and over 2,600 visitors expected. The event could generate MYR31.6 million in tourism revenue.

Competitive Format and Prize Pool

The tournament will feature team and individual events for men, women, and mixed doubles. The Team Event, running from October 7-13, will include 64 teams of 12 players each. The Individual Events, including a Junior Category, will follow from October 15-20, targeting 320 players in the Open division and 192 in the Junior division.

With a total prize pool of MYR100,000, the event will offer the largest cash rewards in the region, further attracting top-ranked players from around the world.

Boosting Sports Tourism in Malaysia

MPG2025 is endorsed by national and regional pickleball associations and supported by the Ministry of Youth and Sports and Sarawak’s tourism and development ministries. MATTA President Nigel Wong emphasized its importance, stating:

“As part of our commitment to promoting sports tourism, MATTA is taking the lead in establishing the Malaysia Pickleball Grand Slam as an annual event. This tournament elevates Malaysia’s standing in the international sports scene. It encourages inbound and domestic tourism, allowing international players and visitors to experience our country’s rich culture, breathtaking landscapes, and warm hospitality. By integrating sports and tourism, we want to create a lasting impact on the economy and position Malaysia as a must-visit sports tourism hub.”-(Nigel Wong)
