Jaume Martinez-Vich’s Backhand Secrets: Pickleball coach Jaume Martinez-Vich is teaching players how to get faster hands at the net through proper technique and positioning. In a recent drill session focused on volley-to-volley exercises, Martinez-Vich explained how using the backhand can boost control and reaction speed.

Backhand Over Forehand

Martinez-Vich told players to stop relying on forehands. “What I don’t want is everybody sitting just on the forehand,” he said. Instead, he encouraged players to “cover most of our body with our backhand.”

He demonstrated how this gives more control, even when the ball comes toward the forehand. “If she plays to my forehand, it has to be all the way here,” he said. “I can even hit backhands almost all the way here.”

Body Position and Paddle Height

A major mistake he noted was paddle placement. “I see a lot of people also waiting with the paddle down here and when the ball comes up you guys do it like this,” he said. This leads to missed shots.

Martinez-Vich advised players to “sit a little bit more” and stay in a ready position. “I’m lifting up my body and I’m just hitting the ball forward,” he said.

Fast Hands Require Leg Work

He explained that the quick rallies seen in pro matches aren’t just hand speed—they involve the legs. “When you see all the pros doing all these fast things, we’re doing more of a leg exercise,” he said.

Martinez-Vich moved during the demo to show how he adjusts. “I will hit backhand backhand and if I see that she might hit this way, I’m switching with my body to keep hitting backhands.”

Keep It Simple and Controlled

He reminded players not to focus on winning points during drills. “Don’t try to finish the point but just going back and forth, back and forth,” he said. “That’s it. Easy.”

The Impact of Technique Training

Martinez-Vich’s tips emphasize efficiency over flash. By using the backhand and staying ready, players can improve their reaction time and consistency. The advice is especially helpful for players looking to match the speed and rhythm of higher-level play without overcomplicating grip changes or footwork.
